We offer both thesis and non-thesis degrees, the difference is detailed in the Graduate Catalog. This page outlines the structure of the thesis option. If you are an enrolled student, more detail may be found in the thesis tutorial course in Moodle.
Green Mountain College recognizes two types of thesis students may choose between: an Applied Professional Project and a Research Based/Academic Project.
The Applied Professional Project is a significant work that is produced with a particular audience in mind. The focus and types of applied professional projects often expand from a student’s prior experience and/or provide a bridge toward new professional goals. Types of projects that have been done include an original and extensive environmental policy analysis paper, an extensive GIS mapping project and the design and implementation of a public consultation/involvement process for natural resource or environmental management. Many others are possible.
The Research Based/Academic Project is either a science based research project including data collection and analysis that ideally qualifies for publication in a peer reviewed journal or in-depth research leading to a communications, advocacy, or creative writing project. The methodology for data collection and analysis will depend upon discipline-specific requirements. Students are assigned an advisor from GMC Faculty, and choose an additional qualified individual from their own bioregion. All thesis advisors are approved by the Program Director.
